Emi Avora’s paintings exist in a state of suspension—between interior and exterior, the familiar and the imagined, memory and the present moment. Her practice inhabits this threshold, turning the everyday into fields of colour, pattern, and light that invite viewers to drift and dwell. Her recent recognition through the Overseas Women in Art Prize affirms the relevance of this position: a woman artist working across geographies while maintaining a distinct visual voice.

Born in Athens in 1979 and educated at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford, and the Royal Academy Schools in London, Avora developed a deep engagement with painting’s histories and its capacity for renewal. Her move to Singapore six years ago introduced tropical vegetation, humidity, and Southeast Asian visual density into her vocabulary, which now merges with Mediterranean memory to form a practice that is mobile yet personal.

Her compositions dissolve interiors and exteriors into dreamlike spaces that resist linear perspective. Lush plants, abundant tables, and patterned surfaces move across vibrant grounds, creating environments that feel both domestic and wild—a garden filtered through recollection. Colour, light, and composition function as emotional structures, allowing painting to transform experience rather than simply represent it.

Subtle art-historical echoes — still life, the interior, ornamental fragments, even traces of classical form — appear not as nostalgia but as continuity within change. In dialogue with Southeast Asian motifs, these elements create hybrid spaces where history and geography intermingle.
