OVERVIEW
Sun Xiaolan transforms West Lake into a fluid, fleeting landscape, capturing trees, hills and sky as fragmented reflections on rippling water.
Her practice explores three states of matter: liquid through her water paintings, texture through botanical works on ramie—a traditional Chinese cloth woven by generations of women—and touch through hand-built ceramic vessels. Together, the works connect nature, material and the long tradition of women’s observation of the natural world.

BIOGRAPHY
Sun Xiaolan is a Chinese contemporary artist whose practice evolves from landscape oil painting into a multimedia exploration of silk, ramie, mixed media and ceramics. For many years, her focus has been Hangzhou’s West Lake, viewed through a distinctive downward gaze. Rather than depicting landscape from the elevated perspective of traditional shanshui painting, Sun captures its reflections on water—fragmented, inverted and continually disrupted by falling droplets.
Across paintings of water, botanical studies and hand-built ceramic vessels, Sun explores tactile perception, ecological memory and feminine ways of knowing. Her use of ramie, a traditional fabric woven by generations of Chinese women, embeds material and cultural histories within her work, while her ceramics extend these ideas into physical space. Her practice contributes to international conversations around ecofeminism and material feminism while remaining rooted in Chinese landscape tradition.
Sun has exhibited extensively across Europe and Asia, including London, Paris, Shanghai, Tokyo and Venice. Tender Archives at ART021 Shanghai 2026 marks the first major presentation of her full multimedia practice in China.
