RÔMULO AVI

Rômulo Avi is a Brazilian multidisciplinary artist based between London and São Paulo. His practice is grounded in material experimentation, using painting and image-making as a means of exploring memory, transformation and the relationship between the material and the imagined.

Drawing on ongoing research into philosophy, mythology and literature, Avi constructs landscapes and psychological spaces that move between the recognisable and the speculative. Rather than approaching representation as direct depiction, he reduces figures and recurring motifs towards archetypal forms, allowing them to function as points of orientation within environments that appear simultaneously ancient, imagined and emergent.

Avi’s works develop through a physical and layered process of brushing, sanding, digging, coating and erasure. He treats the surface as an active site of negotiation, where forms are repeatedly revealed, obscured and reconfigured. This process introduces an element of contingency into the work, creating a dialogue between artistic intention and the unpredictable behaviour of materials.

Through this continuous process of construction and removal, Avi creates works that resist fixed narratives. Symbolic forms shift between material presence and suggestion, opening contemplative spaces in which memory, mythology and emotional states can be reinterpreted. His practice ultimately considers the artwork as a transitional territory: grounded in physical process while remaining open to poetic and speculative readings.

Avi completed an MA in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School in 2022. He previously undertook the Advanced Drawing and Painting Programme at The Florence Academy of Art in 2020 and holds a BA in Architecture and Urban Planning from PUCCAMP, Brazil.
