Laura Holmes (b. 2000, Norwich) is a British painter based in London whose practice explores the material and conceptual possibilities of painting. Working primarily with oil and oilstick, she develops large-scale canvases through an intuitive process in which colour, memory, observation and gesture converge.
Holmes’ work investigates the relationship between control and spontaneity, treating painting as both a physical substance and a space for continual experimentation. She graduated from the Royal College of Art’s Painting programme in 2023, following a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at De Montfort University. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across the UK and is held in private and public collections in the UK, the Netherlands and Nigeria.

BIOGRAPHY
Laura Holmes is a British artist based in London whose painting practice explores psychological states, memory, perception and the instability of the everyday. Through layered compositions, shifting perspectives and ambiguous forms, Holmes creates works that move between the familiar and the uncanny, often allowing domestic, bodily and imagined spaces to overlap.
Her paintings are developed through an intuitive and process-led approach in which imagery is repeatedly constructed, altered and reworked. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, Holmes creates open-ended psychological environments in which fragments of experience, observation and imagination coexist. Her work is particularly concerned with the tension between internal and external realities, and with the ways in which emotion can transform our perception of space and form.
Holmes completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2023, following a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from De Montfort University in 2021.
Her solo exhibitions include *I Am In Ostrich* at D Contemporary, London (2024), and *Colour of a Bruise* at MAPA Fine Art, Bermondsey Project Space, London (2022). She has also participated in group exhibitions including *GEIST* at D Contemporary, London (2025); *Deus Ex Machina* at The Bomb Factory, London (2024); *The Butterfly Effect* and *Adjacent Colours* at D Contemporary, London (2023); and the Royal College of Art degree exhibition at Truman Brewery, London (2023).
Her work has been featured in *FAD Magazine*, *Subo Art Magazine* and *Art Collector News*, among other publications and interviews.
Holmes’ work is held in the Yu Foundation Collection, the Cedars-Sinai Collection, and private collections in Miami, the Netherlands, Spain and Nigeria.
